Kottakkal Varanadi Kashayam is a sixteen-herb classical decoction headed by Varana (Crataeva nurvala, listed here as Crataeva magna), the tree whose bark gives the group its name. Varanadi simply means Varana and the rest, the usual Ayurvedic way of naming a Gana after its first drug. Sairyaka, Chitraka, Bilva and Vishanika round out the blend. It is a long-standing choice for healthy metabolism, balanced Kapha and Meda, and comfortable, unhurried digestion.

Ayurvedic Significance

The Varanadi Gana is described in the classics as Kapha-Medohara, the group that addresses heaviness born of excess Kapha and unmetabolised Meda Dhatu. Its herbs are largely Katu, Tikta and Ushna, so they kindle Agni and carry out Deepana and Pachana on the Ama that clogs the Medovaha Srotas. Chitraka and Shunthi-natured drugs sharpen digestive fire; Varana, Bilva and Haritaki keep the channels scraping clean through Lekhana action. Practitioners lean on this Kwatha where sluggish metabolism, dullness in the head and a heavy, uncomfortable belly travel together.

Key Benefits

  • Healthy metabolism – the classical Medohara group, traditionally taken to support the body's own handling of fat tissue and a comfortable body composition.
  • Kapha and Meda balance – helps lighten the heaviness, sluggishness and damp dullness of accumulated Kapha.
  • Comfortable digestion – the pungent and bitter herbs support Deepana and Pachana, easing fullness and heaviness after meals.
  • Clear, light head – traditionally used where Kapha heaviness settles above the shoulders, supporting head comfort and mental clarity.
  • Easy joint movement – the Lekhana action supports clearing of Ama from the joints, encouraging comfortable everyday mobility.

Ingredients

Each serving of the decoction is prepared from Sairyakayugma (Barleria strigosa) 2.470 g, Varana (Crataeva magna) 1.235 g, Satavari (Asparagus racemosus) 1.235 g, Dahana or Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica) 1.235 g, Morata (Chonemorpha fragrans) 1.235 g, Vilwa or Bilva (Aegle marmelos) 1.235 g, Vishanika (Gymnema sylvestre) 1.235 g, Brihati (Solanum anguivi) 1.235 g, Nidigdhika or Kantakari (Solanum virginianum) 1.235 g, Karanja (Pongamia pinnata) 1.235 g and Putikaranja (Holoptelea integrifolia) 1.235 g. Completing the sixteen, each at 1.235 g, are Jaya or Agnimantha (Premna corymbosa), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Bahalapallava (Moringa concanensis), Darbha (Desmostachya bipinnata) and Rujakara (Semecarpus anacardium).

Suggested Use

Adults are traditionally given 10 to 15 ml twice daily. Dilute the measured dose in an equal quantity of warm water and take it before food, the customary Anupana for a Kashayam. A pinch of honey is the traditional companion where Kapha runs high. For dosage and duration suited to your constitution (Prakriti), consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Additional Information

You may find this formulation listed under several spellings. Kashayam, Kashaya, Kwatha, Kwatham and Kadha all name the same class of water decoction, and the product name itself appears as Varanadi, Varanaadi, Waranadi, Varanady or Varanadi Kwatham. These are simply different transliterations of the same Sanskrit words into English.
