Ayaskriti is a classical fermented Ayurvedic liquid preparation. Its name comes from Ayas, the Sanskrit word for iron, reflecting the traditional practice of steeping the herbal decoction in an iron vessel or with iron, so the finished tonic carries the qualities of iron along with a rich blend of heartwood herbs. It has long been a much-used preparation in Kerala for the metabolism and the blood.

Ayurvedic Significance

In Ayurveda, sluggish metabolism, heaviness and poor assimilation are understood as aggravated Kapha with excess Meda (fat) and Ama obstructing the channels, while tiredness and pallor reflect a weak Rakta (blood) dhatu. Ayaskriti works on both. Its predominantly bitter and astringent heartwood herbs, such as Asana, Khadira, Arjuna and Dhava, are classically Lekhana (scraping) and Kaphahara, kindling Agni and clearing Ama, while the iron content is a traditional Raktavardhaka that supports the blood. It is regarded as Kapha-Meda reducing and metabolism-supporting in nature.

Traditional Uses and Benefits

  • Metabolic support: Traditionally used to support healthy metabolism and assimilation.
  • Kapha and Meda balance: Bitter, astringent heartwoods help settle heaviness and excess Meda.
  • Blood support: The iron content is a classical support for the Rakta dhatu.
  • Channel clearing: Supports the natural clearing of Ama and free flow through the channels.

These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.

Key Ingredients

  • Ayas (iron), the classical Raktavardhaka element
  • Asana (Pterocarpus marsupium) and Khadira (Acacia catechu)
  • Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) and Dhava (Anogeissus latifolia)
  • A group of classical heartwood herbs

Suggested Use

Traditionally taken as 12 to 24ml, mixed with an equal quantity of water, usually after food, or as directed by your physician. Water is the usual Anupana (vehicle). As this is an iron-bearing metabolic tonic often used as part of a wider regimen, it is best taken under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, who can advise on dose and duration.

Additional Information

This preparation is written in several ways, including Ayaskriti, Ayaskrithi, Ayaskruti and Ayaskrithy. The word derives from Ayas (iron) and refers to a classical iron-processed liquid; it belongs to the family of fermented and iron-steeped Ayurvedic tonics. These variations simply reflect different transliterations of the original Sanskrit and regional Indian names into English and refer to the same classical preparation.
