Triphala Guggulu is a classical Ayurvedic tablet that unites two of the tradition's most respected herbal groups in a base of purified Guggulu resin. The name says it all: Triphala ("three fruits": Haritaki, Bibhitaki and Amalaki), together with the pungent Trikatu spices, carried by Guggulu (the resin of Commiphora mukul). Guggulu is a classical Yogavahi, a substance that carries the action of its companion herbs deep into the tissues.

Ayurvedic Significance

In Ayurveda, heaviness, sluggish metabolism and a sense of accumulation are understood as aggravated Kapha with excess Meda (fat) and Ama obstructing the channels. Triphala Guggulu is a classically Lekhana (scraping) and Kapha-Meda reducing formulation. The Triphala fruits are Tridoshic and gently cleansing, the Trikatu spices (ginger, black pepper and long pepper) are sharply Deepana, kindling Agni and burning Ama, and the Guggulu carries these actions into the deeper tissues while supporting the natural clearing of the channels. It is regarded as cleansing, metabolism-supporting and Kapha-pacifying in nature.

Traditional Uses and Benefits

  • Metabolic support: Traditionally used to support healthy metabolism and the balance of Meda (fat tissue).
  • Cleansing action: The Lekhana quality supports the natural clearing of Ama from the channels.
  • Kapha balance: The warming spices and Guggulu help settle the heaviness of aggravated Kapha.
  • Agni support: Trikatu kindles digestive fire and supports comfortable digestion.

These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.

Ingredients

Each uncoated, binder-free tablet is formulated to the classical proportion of one part each of Haritaki, Bibhitaki, Amalaki and Pippali to five parts of purified (Shodhit) Guggulu:

  • Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), 1 part
  • Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), 1 part
  • Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), 1 part
  • Pippali (Piper longum), 1 part
  • Shodhit Guggulu (purified Commiphora mukul), 5 parts

Suggested Use

Traditionally taken as two tablets twice daily, or as directed by your physician. The preferred Anupana (vehicle) is warm water, which supports the warming, cleansing action of the formulation; it is usually taken after food. Please consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for personalised guidance.

Additional Information

This formulation is written in several ways, including Triphala Guggulu, Triphala Guggul and Triphala Gugglu. The words Guggulu, Gulgulu and Guggul all refer to the same purified resin; Triphala also appears as Triphalaa, and Trikatu (the three pungents) as Trikatu or Trikatuka. These variations simply reflect different transliterations of the original Sanskrit and regional Indian names into English and refer to the same classical preparation.
