Raasnadi Churnam is a classical Ayurvedic herbal powder (Churna) intended for external application to the scalp. The name comes from its chief herb, Rasna, with the suffix adi meaning "and others". Uniquely among powders, this Churnam is not taken internally but dusted or applied over the scalp, a traditional Kerala practice, especially after a head bath.

Ayurvedic Significance

In Ayurveda, a heavy head, dullness and congestion following a bath, or during damp weather, are understood as aggravated Kapha and Vata settling in the head and the channels of the face and sinuses. Raasnadi Churnam is a warming, aromatic, Kapha-clearing powder. Herbs such as Rasna, Kottam, Vacha, Vyosha (Trikatu) and Devadaru are penetrating and drying, traditionally applied to the scalp to keep the head warm and dry, prevent the lingering dampness of Kapha after bathing and support a clear, comfortable head.

Traditional Uses and Benefits

  • After-bath care: Traditionally applied to the scalp after a head bath to keep the head warm and dry.
  • Head comfort: Valued for supporting a clear, comfortable head, especially in damp weather.
  • Kapha clearing: The warming, aromatic herbs help settle the dampness and heaviness of Kapha in the head.
  • Sinus support: A classical support for the channels of the face and sinuses.

These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.

Key Ingredients

  • Rasna, the aromatic, warming chief herb
  • Kottam (Kushta) and Vayampu (Vacha)
  • Vyosha (Trikatu: pepper, long pepper and ginger) and Devadaru
  • Bala, Musta, Ushira and Gairika (purified red ochre)

Suggested Use

For external use only. Traditionally mixed with a little boiled milk to form a paste and applied over the scalp, or dusted onto the scalp and hair after a head bath, then left in place, or as advised. It is particularly used in cool, damp conditions to keep the head warm and dry. Please consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for guidance suited to your needs.

  • Patch test: try on a small area first if you have sensitive skin.

Additional Information

This formulation is written in several ways, including Raasnadi, Rasnadi and Raasnaadi Churnam. The words Churnam, Churna and Choornam all refer to a finely powdered herbal preparation, and Rasna also appears as Raasna. These variations simply reflect different transliterations of the original Sanskrit and regional Indian names into English and refer to the same classical preparation. Note that, unlike most Churnas, this one is intended for external scalp application, not for taking by mouth.
