Balaashwagandhaadi Thailam takes its name from its two principal herbs — bala, meaning strength, and ashwagandha, the horse-scented root — combined with laksha and a long list of fragrant woods in a sesame base. It is a rich, warming oil made for external massage over the limbs, back and shoulders. In Kerala it is among the oils most often reached for when the body has been worked hard, and it has a settled place in the classical routine of daily self-massage.

Ayurvedic Significance

Ayurveda places abhyanga, oil massage, at the centre of daily care, and describes warm unctuous oils as the primary means of settling Vata dosha, the principle governing movement and dryness. Balaashwagandhaadi Thailam is recorded in the classical Kerala texts among the brimhana or nourishing oils. Bala and Ashwagandha are both balya herbs, meaning strength-giving, while the sandalwood, manjishta and usheera in the paste keep the formula from turning overheating. The overall effect is grounding rather than stimulating.

Traditional Uses & Benefits

  • Supports comfortable, easy movement in the joints and limbs.
  • Traditionally used after physical exertion to ease tired muscles.
  • Nourishing and grounding, valued for settling Vata through cold, dry seasons.
  • A warming evening massage that supports restful sleep.
  • Traditionally applied over the lower back, shoulders, arms and legs.
  • Leaves the skin soft, supple and well nourished.

Key Ingredients

  • Bala (Sida cordifolia): the herb of strength, central to classical Vata oils.
  • Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): grounding root long used to support stamina and calm.
  • Laksha (Laccifer lacca): natural lac resin, traditionally linked with strong bones.
  • Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata): warming herb classically associated with joint comfort.
  • Manjishta (Rubia cordifolia): madder root, valued for its effect on the skin.
  • Usheera (Vetiveria zizanioides): cooling vetiver root that balances the warming herbs.
  • Tila Taila (Sesamum indicum): the sesame base of the classical preparation.

Formulated according to the traditional principles of Ayurveda.

Suggested Use

For external application only. Warm a little oil to body temperature and work it into the shoulders, arms, lower back and legs with long strokes along the limbs and circular strokes at the joints. Allow twenty to thirty minutes for the oil to settle, then bathe in warm water. Daily use suits most people, though a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner can advise on what fits your constitution.

Safety & Certifications

For external use only. Do not take internally. Keep away from the eyes and from broken or irritated skin, and patch test on the inner forearm before first use. Seek advice from a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner if pregnant or nursing. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Manufactured in India in a GMP-certified Ayurvedic facility to the standards of the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Additional Information

This oil is also written as Balashwagandhadi, Bala Ashwagandhadi or Balaswagandhadi, with the oil suffix appearing as Taila, Tailam, Thailam or Thaila. These are simply different transliterations of one Sanskrit name into English, all naming the same classical formulation. This 200ml bottle is for external application only. Colour and aroma vary naturally between batches because the herbs are cooked into the sesame base, and slight settling or separation is normal.
