Asanavilwaadi Thailam is a classical Kerala oil named for its two lead herbs — asana, the Indian kino tree, and vilwa, the bael tree — with the suffix adi marking the further herbs that complete the recipe. A decoction of roots and fruits is processed with cow’s milk into a sesame base, giving a light, softly cooling oil intended for application over the head and neck. Kerala practitioners have used it for generations in the traditional therapies that centre on the head.

Ayurvedic Significance

Ayurveda calls the head the seat of the sense organs, and places oil applied there among the most valued of external practices. Asanavilwaadi Thailam is recorded in the Kerala classical compendia among the oils for shiro-abhyanga, oil application to the head. The formulation leans towards pacifying Pitta and Vata, the doshas connected with heat and dryness in the upper body. Milk and licorice give it a soft, cooling quality, while bael and kino contribute a light astringent note.

Traditional Uses & Benefits

  • Traditionally applied over the head and neck to encourage a light, comfortable feeling.
  • Its cooling character is valued during hot weather and in warm climates.
  • Used in classical shiro-abhyanga and shirodhara practice.
  • Supports a calm, settled state after long hours of concentration or screen work.
  • Nourishes the scalp and hair roots with regular external application.
  • Traditionally applied around the ears and temples for a soothing effect.

Key Ingredients

  • Asana (Pterocarpus marsupium): Indian kino heartwood, astringent and traditionally cooling.
  • Vilwa (Aegle marmelos): bael root bark, aromatic and long used in head care.
  • Bala (Sida cordifolia): strengthening herb found in many Vata-balancing oils.
  • Amruta (Tinospora cordifolia): the “nectar creeper”, valued for restoring balance.
  • Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra): sweet licorice root, soothing to delicate tissue.
  • Triphala (three fruits): the classical trio of Haritaki, Bibhitaki and Amalaki.
  • Tila Taila (Sesamum indicum): sesame base that carries the herbs into the skin.

Formulated according to the traditional principles of Ayurveda.

Suggested Use

For external application only. Warm a small quantity of the oil to body temperature and massage it gently into the scalp, forehead, temples and back of the neck using slow, circular fingertip movements. Leave in place for thirty to sixty minutes, then wash out with warm water and a mild cleanser. Two or three applications a week suit most routines. A qualified Ayurvedic practitioner can advise on frequency.

Safety & Certifications

For external use only. Do not take internally. Avoid contact with the eyes and rinse with clean water should contact occur. Carry out a patch test on the inner forearm before first use, and keep away from broken or irritated skin. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Manufactured in India in a GMP-certified Ayurvedic facility to the standards of the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Additional Information

This oil also appears as Asanavilwadi, Asana Vilwadi, Asanabilvadi, Asana Bilwadi, and with the oil suffix written as Taila, Tailam, Thailam or Thaila. These are simply different transliterations of one Sanskrit name into English, all naming the same classical formulation. This 200ml bottle is for external application only. Colour and aroma vary naturally between batches because the herbs are cooked into the oil base, and slight settling or separation is normal.
