Narayana Thailam is a revered classical Ayurvedic oil (Taila). Its name, Narayana, is a name of the divine, reflecting the esteem in which this deeply nourishing Vata oil is held. Built on the Dashamoola roots, Bala, Ashwagandha and a rich array of aromatic and nervine herbs in a sesame oil and goat's milk base, it is traditionally applied to the head and body.

Ayurvedic Significance

In Ayurveda, tension in the head, restlessness and a tired, over-active mind are understood as aggravated Vata, particularly Prana Vata, rising into the head, while stiffness and weakness of the body reflect Vata in the Mamsa and Majja dhatus. Narayana is a classically Vatahara and nourishing oil. The Dashamoola and Bala soothe and strengthen, aromatic nervines such as Tagara, Jatamansi and Chandana calm the mind, and the milk and oil base carry these qualities gently into the tissues. It is regarded as calming, nourishing and Vata-soothing in nature.

Traditional Uses and Benefits

  • Head comfort: Traditionally applied to the head to soothe tension and support a calm, settled feeling.
  • Body strength: Valued for nourishing and strengthening the body and easing Vata stiffness.
  • Calm and rest: The aromatic nervines support a calm mind and restful state.
  • Vata balance: Directed at settling aggravated Vata in the head and body.

These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.

Key Ingredients

  • Dashamoola (the classical ten roots) and Bala (Sida cordifolia)
  • Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Shatavari
  • Tagara (Valerian), Mamsi (Jatamansi) and Chandana (sandalwood)
  • Sesame oil and goat's milk as the nourishing base

Suggested Use

For external use. The required quantity is applied and gently massaged over the head or the affected areas of the body, ideally warmed a little beforehand. A calm setting and gentle, unhurried massage enhance the Vata-soothing effect. Please consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for guidance suited to your constitution and needs.

Safety & Certifications

  • External use only: avoid contact with the eyes and broken skin, and do not swallow.
  • Contains dairy and an animal-derived aromatic: processed with goat's milk and, in the traditional formula, a small quantity of musk.
  • Patch test: do a patch test before first use if you have sensitive skin.
  • Traditional preparation: made to classical Taila Paka methods with authentically sourced herbs in GMP-certified facilities.
  • Storage: store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children.

Additional Information

This oil is written in several ways, including Naarayana, Narayana and Narayan Thailam, and should not be confused with the larger Mahanarayana ("great Narayana") formula. The words Thailam, Tailam, Taila and Tel all refer to a medicated oil, and Narayana also appears as Naaraayana. These variations simply reflect different transliterations of the original Sanskrit and regional Indian names into English and refer to the same classical preparation.
