Haritaki Powder is pure, finely milled Terminalia chebula, perhaps the single most celebrated herb in all of Ayurveda. The name carries deep meaning: Haritaki is said to come from harate, "that which carries away", a reference to its reputation for carrying away imbalance from the body, and it is also linked to Hara (Lord Shiva), from whose realm in the Himalayas the fruit is traditionally said to originate. It is the first of the three fruits of Triphala.
Ayurvedic Significance
Haritaki is one of the rare Tridoshic herbs, able to help balance all three doshas, though it is above all a Rasayana (rejuvenative) for Vata. Predominantly astringent in taste, with a warming energy and a sweet post-digestive effect (Vipaka), it is classically Deepana and Pachana, kindling Agni and helping to clear Ama, the sticky metabolic residue. It is especially valued for the Purishavaha srotas and the colon, the classical seat of Vata, where it supports regular, comfortable elimination. Traditional texts also regard it as Medhya, nourishing to the mind and the nerves.
Traditional Uses and Benefits
- Digestive support: Traditionally used to kindle Agni and support comfortable digestion and absorption.
- Gentle elimination: Classically valued for regulating the colon and supporting regular, natural elimination.
- Vata balance: A foremost Rasayana for settling dry, mobile, aggravated Vata.
- Ama clearing: The astringent, warming action supports the natural clearing of Ama from the channels.
These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.
Ingredients
- Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), pure fruit powder, with no fillers or additives
Suggested Use
Traditionally, a quarter to half a teaspoon is taken once daily, or as directed by your physician. The preferred Anupana (vehicle) varies with the intention: warm water is the everyday choice, and it is classically taken in the evening to support gentle overnight elimination. Ayurvedic tradition also pairs it with a little honey, ghee or warm water depending on the constitution and season. Please consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for guidance suited to your needs.

Additional Information
This herb is written in several ways, including Haritaki, Haritaky, Harad, Harde and Kadukai, and it is known in English as chebulic myrobalan. The words Churna, Choorna and powder all refer to the same finely milled form. These variations simply reflect different transliterations of the original Sanskrit and regional Indian names into English and refer to the same herb. Haritaki is also the Vata-balancing member of the classical three-fruit blend Triphala (with Amalaki and Bibhitaki).
