Pippali Powder is pure, finely milled fruit of Piper longum, the Indian long pepper. Its Sanskrit name Pippali is the very root of the English word "pepper", reflecting how prized this spice has been across the ancient world. Unusually among the pungent spices, Pippali is not only a powerful stimulant but also a Rasayana (rejuvenative), especially for the lungs.
Ayurvedic Significance
Pippali is a classically warming, Kapha and Vata pacifying herb (its pungency can increase Pitta in excess). Strongly Deepana and Pachana, it kindles Agni, burns away Ama and revives sluggish digestion. It is especially valued for the Pranavaha srotas, the channels of breathing, where its warming, clearing quality supports the chest and comfortable breathing. Uniquely, it is also considered a Rasayana for the lungs and a Vajikara (rejuvenative) tonic. Pippali is one of the three spices of Trikatu (with black pepper and ginger), the classical compound that rekindles Agni and helps the body assimilate other foods and herbs.
Traditional Uses and Benefits
- Digestive support: Traditionally used to kindle Agni, clear Ama and revive sluggish digestion.
- Respiratory comfort: A classical Rasayana for the lungs, supporting the chest and clear breathing.
- Kapha balance: The warming, clearing quality helps settle heaviness and congestion of aggravated Kapha.
- Bioavailability: As part of Trikatu, it supports the assimilation of other foods and herbs.
These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.
Ingredients
- Pippali (Piper longum) fruit, pure powder, with no fillers or additives
Suggested Use
Traditionally, a small pinch to a quarter teaspoon is taken once or twice daily, or as directed by your physician. Because it is potent and warming, it is used in small amounts. The classical Anupana (vehicle) is a little honey or warm water, and for respiratory support it is traditionally taken as a warm milk decoction. Please consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for personalised guidance.

Additional Information
This herb is written in several ways, including Pippali, Pipali, Peepal, Pippli and Indian long pepper. The words Churna, Choorna and powder all refer to the same finely milled form. These variations simply reflect different transliterations of the original Sanskrit and regional Indian names into English and refer to the same herb. Pippali is also one of the three pungents of the classical Trikatu blend (with Maricha and Shunti).
