Nagarjuna Murivenna is one of the best known oils of Kerala practice, a coconut oil cooked with the fresh juices of Kumari, Sigru, Paribhadra, Palandu and Thamboola. Nagarjuna prepares it to the classical method, and it is massaged in around joints and muscles after strain or heavy exertion.
Muri is the Malayalam word for a strain or a break and venna means the oil applied to it, so the name is simply the oil kept for those occasions.
Ayurvedic Significance
Classical practice regards strain and overexertion as places where Vata gathers in Asthi, Sandhi and Mamsa, the bone, joint and muscle tissues, leaving stiffness and unease. Murivenna answers with Snehana, the oiling that settles Vata, carried in a coconut base chosen for its cooling Sheeta quality so it does not add heat where heat is already present. The fresh juices keep the bright, living character of the herbs.
Traditional Uses & Benefits
- Joint comfort: the classical Kerala use, applied around joints after exertion.
- Easy movement: traditionally massaged in to support supple, freely moving limbs.
- Comfortable muscles: valued after sport, heavy work or a long day on the feet.
- Settled Vata: the Snehana action calms the dryness and unease of aggravated Vata.
- Cooling base: the coconut oil keeps the application light and comfortable in warm weather.
This is an external preparation used in traditional Ayurvedic practice and is not a statement of medical effect.
Key Ingredients
- Kumari (Aloe vera): the cooling fresh juice that leads the formulation.
- Sigru (Moringa oleifera): drumstick leaf juice, the classical Vata-settling herb here.
- Paribhadra (Erythrina variegata): the Indian coral tree leaf of the traditional recipe.
- Thamboola (Piper betle): betel leaf, warm and aromatic against the cooling base.
- Palandu (Allium cepa) and Vasuka (Spermacoce hispida): the supporting fresh juices.
- Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus): the soothing paste herb of the preparation.
- Kera Taila and Tandulodaka: the coconut oil base and rice-washed water it is cooked with.
Prepared to classical proportions in a coconut oil base.
Suggested Use
For external use. Warm a little oil and massage gently over the joints or muscles once or twice daily, leaving it on for thirty to sixty minutes before a warm bath. Ask a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for a routine suited to you.
