Chandanadi Thailam is a beautifully cooling classical Ayurvedic oil (Taila). It is named for its chief ingredient, Chandana (Santalum album, sandalwood), the most cooling and fragrant of Ayurvedic woods, joined by the suffix adi meaning "and others". Rich in cooling herbs and processed with cow's milk and Aloe vera, it is a much-loved oil for the body and hair, applied externally.

Ayurvedic Significance

In Ayurveda, a sense of internal heat, burning sensations, dizziness and restlessness are typically understood as aggravated Pitta disturbing the Rakta (blood) dhatu. Chandanadi is a classically Pitta-pacifying (Pittahara) and Daha-prashamana (heat-soothing) oil. Sandalwood, Ushira, Manjishta and Sariva are among the most cooling of herbs, and the milk and Aloe base deepen this soothing quality. Applied to the head and body, it cools excess heat, calms the mind and supports comfortable Vata-Pitta balance. It is regarded as cooling, calming and refreshing in nature.

Traditional Uses and Benefits

  • Cooling comfort: Traditionally used to soothe internal heat and burning sensations.
  • Body and hair oil: Valued as a cooling oil for whole-body massage and for the scalp and hair.
  • Pitta balance: Sandalwood and cooling herbs settle the heat of aggravated Pitta.
  • Calming the mind: The fragrant, cooling oil supports a calm, refreshed feeling.

These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.

Key Ingredients

  • Chandana (Santalum album, sandalwood), the cooling, fragrant chief herb
  • Udichya / Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides) and Sariva (Hemidesmus indicus)
  • Manjishta (Rubia cordifolia) and Bala (Sida cordifolia)

Additional Information

This oil is written in several ways, including Chandaanaadi, Chandanadi and Chandanaadi Thailam. The words Thailam, Tailam, Taila and Keram all refer to a medicated oil, and Chandana (sandalwood) also appears as Chandan. These variations simply reflect different transliterations of the original Sanskrit and regional Indian names into English and refer to the same classical preparation.
