Gurmar Powder is the dried leaf of Gymnema sylvestre, whose Hindi name means "sugar destroyer" and whose Sanskrit name Madhunashini says the same. It is also called Meshashringi, "ram's horn", after its seed pods. The energetics are kashaya-tikta rasa, ushna virya and katu vipaka, pacifying Kapha and Pitta. Classically it is turned to in Prameha, where Kapha burdens the Meda dhatu.

Gurmar Powder is the dried leaf of Gymnema sylvestre, a woody climber of India's central forests, valued for its steady support of healthy blood sugar balance. The Hindi name Gurmar means "sugar destroyer", and the Sanskrit Madhunashini says the same thing: chew the fresh leaf and sweetness fades from the tongue. It is also called Meshashringi, "ram's horn", after the curl of its seed pods, and Shardunika. Its energetics are kashaya-tikta rasa, astringent and bitter; ushna virya, heating; and katu vipaka. It pacifies Kapha and Pitta.

Ayurvedic Significance

Ayurveda reads the pattern behind disturbed sugar metabolism as Prameha, rooted in Kapha excess and a burdened Meda dhatu, where the Medovaha and Mutravaha Srotas grow clogged with sweetness the body cannot process. Gurmar meets this at several points. Its astringent and bitter rasas are directly opposite to Kapha's sweet, heavy nature, and both tastes are classically kaphaghna. The ushna virya stirs Agni and dhatvagni so Meda is transformed rather than stored, while the katu vipaka completes the drying and clears Ama from the channels. The classical texts name it madhumeha-hara for precisely this reason.

Key Benefits

  • Supports healthy blood sugar balance: The classical madhumeha-hara herb of Ayurveda, turned to wherever the sweet taste burdens metabolism.
  • Blunts the pull of sweetness: The leaf's best-known quality — sweetness quietens on the tongue, which is how it earned the name sugar destroyer.
  • Counters Kapha accumulation: Astringent and bitter rasas oppose Kapha's heavy, sweet nature and help lighten the Medovaha Srotas.
  • Kindles tissue-level metabolism: Heating potency stirs the dhatvagni so the Meda dhatu is properly transformed rather than laid down.
  • Clears Ama from the channels: The pungent post-digestive effect dries residual metabolic congestion, keeping the srotas open.

Formulated according to the traditional principles of Ayurveda.

All Prana Ayurveda herbs are sourced from select wild regions of India, where they naturally develop higher concentrations of active constituents.

Suggested Use

Take 1 g twice daily with warm water, or with a little honey where Kapha is prominent; honey is itself scraping and suits the herb's direction of action. Warm water is the simpler Anupana for daily use. Take it before meals, morning and evening, so the leaf's astringency meets food as it arrives. Triphala or Guduchi Churna may be paired for broader metabolic support. Consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for personalised guidance.

  • Storage: Keep the container tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and out of reach of children.

Additional Information

You may see this herb written as Gurmar, Gudmar or Gurmar Booti, and in powdered form as Churna, Choorna or Churnam. The Sanskrit names Madhunashini, Meshashringi and Shardunika all point to the same leaf, rendered differently from Sanskrit since transliteration follows no single convention. The sugar destroyer name is not folklore: chewing a fresh leaf genuinely blunts the perception of sweetness for a short while. This pack contains 225g.
