Guggul is the treasured resin of Commiphora mukul, the Indian myrrh tree, presented here as pure, purified tablets. Its Sanskrit name Guggulu is said to derive from gulgulu, meaning "that which protects from disease", and it has been prized in Ayurveda for millennia as one of the great Yogavahi substances, a resin that carries the action of other herbs deep into the tissues. Traditionally it must be purified (Shodhana) before use, classically by boiling in a decoction of Triphala or Punarnava.

Ayurvedic Significance

Guggul is warming, bitter, pungent and astringent, and helps balance all three doshas, with a special affinity for Kapha and Vata. It is a classically Lekhana (scraping) herb, traditionally valued for clearing Ama (metabolic residue) and excess Meda (fat) from the channels, and it is one of the most respected herbs for the joints, where its Yogavahi and Vata-pacifying qualities support comfortable movement. As a purifier, it is traditionally said to cleanse the blood, support the natural clearing of the channels and rejuvenate the tissues, particularly the nervous tissue when combined with nourishing herbs.

Traditional Uses and Benefits

  • Metabolic support: Traditionally used to support healthy metabolism and the balance of Meda (fat tissue).
  • Joint comfort: One of the most respected Ayurvedic herbs for the joints and comfortable movement.
  • Cleansing action: The Lekhana quality supports the natural clearing of Ama from the channels.
  • Kapha balance: The warming resin helps settle the heaviness of aggravated Kapha.

These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.

Additional Information

This herb is written in several ways, including Guggul, Guggulu, Gulgulu, Guggal and Indian bdellium; the botanical name appears as Commiphora mukul or Commiphora wightii. The word Shodhit (also Shuddha) means "purified" through classical Shodhana. These variations simply reflect different transliterations of the original Sanskrit and regional Indian names into English and refer to the same substance.
