Chemparathyadi Keram is a classical Kerala herbal oil prepared with the juices of Japa (hibiscus), bael leaf, Ixora, betel leaf, Tulasi, Neeli and Bhumi Amla in a pure coconut oil base. It is traditionally applied to soothe an itchy, flaky, irritated scalp and to cool and comfort dry, reactive skin. The name comes from Chemparathy, the Malayalam name for the hibiscus that leads the recipe, and Keram, coconut oil.

Ayurvedic Significance

Coconut oil is the Kerala tradition's cooling base, sweet and cold in nature, well suited to skin and scalp troubled by heat. Hibiscus is a classical Keshya (hair-beneficial) and cooling herb, and the fresh-juice processing of this oil keeps the herbs' cooling, soothing character intact, calming the Pitta heat behind an itchy scalp and reactive skin.

Traditional Uses and Benefits

  • Scalp soothing: traditionally applied to calm an itchy, flaky scalp.
  • Skin comfort: valued for cooling dry, reactive, irritation-prone skin.
  • Hair care: hibiscus classically nourishes the scalp and roots.
  • Cooling calm: settles the Pitta heat behind itching and irritation.
  • Gentle daily care: mild enough for regular pre-bath application.

These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.

Key Ingredients

  • Japa (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis): hibiscus, the cooling hair classic.
  • Neeli and Bhumi Amla: the darkening and cooling classics.
  • Tulasi, bael leaf and betel leaf juices, in a coconut oil base.

Suggested Use

For external use. Apply gently to the scalp and hair, or to the affected skin, and leave for about half an hour before bathing. Regular use two or three times a week suits most scalps. For a persistent scalp or skin concern, consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Safety & Certifications

  • External use only: not for internal consumption; keep away from the eyes.
  • Traditional preparation: made to classical method with authentically sourced herbs.
  • Quality standards: produced in GMP-certified facilities under strict quality control.
  • Patch test: try on a small area first if your skin is sensitive.
  • Medical care: spreading, weeping or persistent skin or scalp problems should be assessed by a doctor.
  • Storage: store in a cool, dry place, tightly closed; coconut oil may solidify in cool weather, which is natural.

Additional Information

Also written as Chemparuthyadi Keram, Chemparathyadi Kera Tailam or Chemparathyaadi Keram. The word Keram denotes a coconut-oil-based medicated oil, corresponding to the classical Kera Taila; these are simply different transliterations from Sanskrit and Malayalam for the same preparation.
