Prasaaranee Thailam takes its name from prasarini, the spreading creeper, and from the Sanskrit prasarana, meaning to extend. Cooked with curds, milk and fermented gruel in a sesame base, it is a warming body massage oil applied externally over the joints and limbs. It counts among the classical vatahara oils that settle Vata dosha.

12571 Muscle & Nerve Comfort 200ml Sesame Oil Traditional Ayurvedic Formula Nagarjuna

Prasaaranee Thailam is named for prasarini, the creeper that gives the oil its character. The Sanskrit root prasarana means to spread or extend, describing both the trailing habit of the plant and the free extension of the limbs the oil traditionally supports. Nearly five kilograms of the herb go into a single classical batch, cooked with curds, cow’s milk and fermented gruel into a sesame base. This is a warming massage oil, applied externally over the joints and limbs.

Ayurvedic Significance

The oil belongs to the group of vatahara preparations, those that settle Vata dosha. Ayurveda connects Vata with all movement in the body and names the joints among its principal seats. The souring agents in the recipe, curds and kanjika, are a classical technique for helping an oil penetrate the tissues. Prasarini itself is described in the older texts as the herb of extension. Kerala practice draws on this oil widely, in ordinary massage and in the pouring therapies of Panchakarma alike.

Traditional Uses & Benefits

  • Warming massage oil traditionally used to support free, comfortable movement.
  • Valued for easing tightness in the hips, knees and lower back.
  • Traditionally applied along the length of the limbs before or after activity.
  • Supports the muscles and nerves with regular external use.
  • Used in classical Kerala massage and in the pouring therapies of Panchakarma.
  • Suited to cold, dry seasons when Vata tends to rise.

Key Ingredients

  • Prasarini (Paederia foetida): the lead creeper, classically the herb of extension.
  • Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra): licorice root, softening and soothing to the skin.
  • Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata): warming herb long linked with comfortable joints.
  • Devadaru (Cedrus deodara): Himalayan cedar, aromatic and traditionally warming.
  • Pippalimoola (Piper longum): long pepper root, used to carry warmth inward.
  • Mamsi (Nardostachys jatamansi): fragrant spikenard, valued for its calming quality.
  • Tila Taila (Sesamum indicum): the sesame base of this classical preparation.

Formulated according to the traditional principles of Ayurveda.

Suggested Use

For external application only. This is a body massage oil rather than a hair oil. Warm a small quantity and apply to the hips, knees, lower back, shoulders and along the limbs, using long strokes on the muscles and gentle circles at the joints. Leave for twenty to thirty minutes, then bathe in warm water. A qualified Ayurvedic practitioner can advise on frequency.

Safety & Certifications

For external use only. Do not take internally. Keep away from the eyes and from broken or irritated skin, and patch test on the inner forearm before first use. Seek advice from a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner if pregnant or nursing. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Manufactured in India in a GMP-certified Ayurvedic facility to the standards of the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Additional Information

This oil also appears as Prasarani Taila, Prasaranee, Prasarini Thailam, Prasarani Tailam or Prasarini Thaila. These are simply different transliterations of one Sanskrit name into English, all naming the same classical formulation. This 200ml bottle is for external application only. Colour and aroma vary naturally between batches because the herbs are cooked into the sesame base, and slight settling or separation is normal.

Fulfilment Notice: This is a classical Ayurvedic oil prepared by several reputable manufacturers to the same traditional specification.
