Kottakkal Lodhrasavam takes its name from Lodhra, the Symplocos tree whose astringent bark Ayurveda has associated with women's wellbeing for centuries. Twenty-eight botanicals stand with it, among them Priyangu, Kushtha, Bhunimba and the three fruits of Triphala, in a blend traditionally chosen for comfortable monthly cycles and healthy Rakta Dhatu. The ending asavam distinguishes it from an Arishta: an Asava ferments from a cold infusion rather than a boiled decoction, keeping the delicate qualities of the herbs intact.

Ayurvedic Significance

Lodhra is Kashaya in Rasa with a Sheeta Virya, the combination classical authors call Sangrahi and Stambhana: it helps the tissues hold their tone and settles excess Pitta and Kapha in the Artavavaha and Rasavaha Srotas. Priyangu and Nagakesara share that cooling astringency, while Bhunimba, Katukurohini and Patha bring Tikta clarity to Rakta Dhatu. The pungent group of Chavya, Pushkaramula and Agni keeps Agni bright so the formula stays light on digestion. Honey-based Asava fermentation carries these subtle actions deep into the channels without heating the system.

Key Benefits

  • Everyday women's wellness — Lodhra with Priyangu is the classical pairing for supporting the reproductive channels through the monthly rhythm.
  • Comfortable cycles — the cooling, astringent herbs are traditionally used to encourage a steady, unhurried flow and ease through those days.
  • Healthy Rakta Dhatu — Bhunimba, Katukurohini and Triphala are long used to keep the blood tissue clean and well nourished.
  • Even, radiant complexion — Ayurveda reads skin tone as a reflection of Rakta, and this blend has a long reputation for supporting a clear complexion.
  • Light on digestion — the warming aromatics keep Agni steady, so the formula sits easily even when taken over a longer stretch.

Ingredients

Makshika (honey) 4.114 g forms the base. Alongside it, twenty-eight botanicals are each present at 0.016 g: Lodhra (Symplocos cochinchinensis var. laurina), Murva (Chonemorpha fragrans), Sathi (Hedychium spicatum), Vella (Embelia ribes), Bharngi (Rotheca serrata), Nata (Valeriana jatamansi), Plava (Oroxylum indicum), Kalinga (Holarrhena pubescens), Kushtha (Saussurea costus), Kramuka (Areca catechu), Priyangu (Callicarpa macrophylla), Ativisha (Aconitum heterophyllum), Agni (Plumbago zeylanica), Visala (Citrullus colocynthis), Ela (Elettaria cardamomum), Lavanga (Cinnamomum verum), Patra (Cinnamomum tamala), Kesara (Mesua ferrea), Bhunimba (Swertia chirayita), Katukurohini (Neopicrorhiza scrophulariiflora), Yavani (Cuminum cyminum), Pushkaramula (Inula racemosa), Patha (Cyclea peltata), Grandhi (Piper longum, wild variety), Chavya (Piper mullesua), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Amalaki (Phyllanthus emblica) and Vibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica).

Suggested Use

Adults may take 15 to 30 ml, diluted with an equal quantity of water. As a naturally fermented Asavam, it is generally taken after meals in accordance with traditional Ayurvedic practice. Traditional households often follow it with plain warm water. For dosage and duration suited to your constitution (Prakriti), consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Safety & Certifications

  • GMP-certified manufacture by Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal.
  • Classical preparation — made by the traditional methods set out in the Ayurvedic texts.
  • Authentic sourcing — herbs drawn from trusted growing regions and botanically identified before use.
  • AYUSH-aligned operations — strict guidelines govern hygiene, machinery and batch tracking.
  • Tested for purity — every ingredient is examined for purity and identity before it is accepted.
  • Thoughtful use — women who are pregnant or nursing are best guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. Asavams are naturally fermented and carry self-generated alcohol along with honey, so anyone managing blood sugar or avoiding alcohol should seek guidance first.
  • Dosha note — cooling and astringent, well suited to Pitta and Kapha; Vata-predominant individuals may prefer it with warm water.
  • Storage — keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Additional Information

The name appears as Lodhrasavam, Lodhrasava, Lodhrasavamu, Lodhra Asavam or Lodhrasavan. The bark itself is written Lodhra, Lodhram, Lodh or Lodhraka, and the botanical name is given both as Symplocos cochinchinensis var. laurina and, in older sources, Symplocos racemosa. Asavam and Asava are simply two transliterations of the same Sanskrit term for a cold-infusion ferment, the final -m reflecting South Indian usage and the shorter -a the North Indian convention.
