Thriphalaadi Thailam is the classical Triphala hair oil of Kerala, cooked with the fresh juices of Bhringaraja and Amalaki, a decoction of Bala, Asana and Guduchi, and a paste of cooling roots and the lotus group, all in sesame oil and cow's milk. It is traditionally massaged into the scalp for strong hair and a cool, settled head.
Triphala names the three fruits, Haritaki, Vibhitaki and Amalaki, that open the recipe; adi marks the herbs that follow, and Thailam is the finished oil.
Ayurvedic Significance
Ayurveda seats hair in Asthi dhatu and reads thinning, early greying and a hot, itchy scalp as Pitta accumulating at the roots, in Bhrajaka Pitta. The three fruits are Rasayana and Chakshushya, and with Bhringaraja, the great Keshya herb, plus Chandana, Useera and the lotus group they cool the scalp. Jatamamsi and Tagara settle the Vata beneath a restless head.
Traditional Uses & Benefits
- Hair strength and retention: traditionally applied to keep hair strong and well rooted.
- Natural hair colour: classically valued where hair greys early.
- Cool, comfortable scalp: settles a hot, itchy, flaking scalp.
- Head comfort: long used where a heated head feels tight and unsettled.
- Eye comfort: the classical texts link this oil, through Triphala, to comfortable eyes.
This is an external preparation used in traditional Ayurvedic practice and is not a statement of medical effect.
Key Ingredients
- Triphala (Haritaki, Vibhitaki, Amalaki): the three fruits that name and lead the oil.
- Bhrungaraja (Eclipta alba): the foremost Keshya herb, taken here as fresh juice.
- Guduchi, Asana and Indravalli: Tinospora cordifolia, Pterocarpus marsupium and Cardiospermum halicacabum.
- Bala and Aswagandha: the two great strengthening roots.
- Kushta, Padmaka and Devadaru: Saussurea costus, wild Himalayan cherry and cedar heartwood.
- Chandana, Useera and Sariba: sandalwood, vetiver and Indian sarsaparilla, the cooling trio.
- Jatamamsi and Tagara: Nardostachys jatamansi and Indian valerian, both settling.
- The lotus group: Kamala, Kumuda and Utpala, soothing and aromatic.
- Kethaki, Eranda, Neelini and Yashtimadhu: screwpine root, castor, indigo and licorice.
- Base: Tila Thaila (sesame oil) and Godugdha (cow's milk).
Suggested Use
For external use. Apply a suitable quantity to the scalp and along the hair, work it in with the fingertips for a few minutes, and leave for an hour or overnight before washing out with a mild shampoo, two or three times a week. It pairs traditionally with Nalpamaradi Keram for cooling skin care.
Safety & Certifications
- External use only: the classical recipe includes a traditionally processed mineral constituent, so never take it internally, keep it clear of the eyes and rinse with clean water if contact occurs.
- Contains dairy and sesame: processed with cow's milk in a sesame oil base.
- Patch test: try a small area first if your scalp is easily sensitised.
- Traditional preparation: made to classical Taila Paka method from authentically sourced herbs.
- Quality standards: produced in GMP-certified facilities under strict quality control.
- Storage: keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, tightly closed and out of reach of children.
