Frequently Asked Questions
-
Indian string instruments span classical and devotional favourites such as the sitar, tanpura (tambura), ektara, dotara, and the swarmandal, each with its own role and voice. The sitar is the iconic melodic instrument of Hindustani classical music, while the tanpura provides the constant drone that underpins ragas and chanting. There are instruments for serious students and simpler drones for meditation and accompaniment.

A tanpura (or tambura) is a long-necked drone instrument that produces a continuous, resonant background tone, providing the harmonic foundation for Indian classical music, vocal practice, and meditation.
- It sets the reference pitch for singers and players.
- Its rich drone supports raga and chanting.
- Electronic and app tanpuras are also popular for practice.
- It is wonderfully meditative to listen to.
-
It depends on your goal.
- Tanpura: simple to play as a drone, great for singers.
- Ektara or dotara: easy folk and devotional instruments.
- Sitar: rewarding but needs dedicated study and ideally a teacher.
- Start with a well-made, properly set-up instrument.
-
The sitar is a beautiful but demanding instrument that rewards patient, dedicated practice, since it involves complex technique, many strings, and the depth of raga music, so a teacher is highly recommended. Beginners can learn basic technique and simple melodies over time, with mastery being a long, rich journey. For those drawn mainly to meditation or singing, a tanpura drone is a much simpler starting point.
