Shankhapushpi Powder (225g) is milled from the whole plant of Convolvulus pluricaulis, a low creeping herb whose small conch-shaped flowers give it its Sanskrit name. Its Rasa is bitter and astringent, its Virya cooling, its Vipaka sweet. Shankhapushpi settles all three doshas and works most gently on Vata and Pitta. Ayurveda counts it among the Medhya Rasayana herbs, those that nourish the mind, steady the emotions and support clear memory.

Ayurvedic Significance

Classical texts group Shankhapushpi with the Medhya Rasayana herbs, the small handful of plants said to nourish Buddhi, Dhriti and Smriti: intellect, retention and recall. Its cooling, sweet post-digestive nature feeds Majja Dhatu, the tissue Ayurveda associates with the nervous system, while its Vata-settling quality quiets a mind that will not slow down. Practitioners note that Vata-predominant people tend to feel unsettled under pressure, and Pitta types to run changeable in mood; Shankhapushpi speaks to both. Taken steadily, it supports Ojas and restful, unbroken sleep.

Key Benefits

  • Calm and Emotional Balance — Traditionally taken during unsettled, demanding periods to support a steady, even frame of mind.
  • Memory and Recall — A classical Medhya herb, valued for supporting Smriti and clear, sustained attention.
  • Restful Sleep — Its cooling, grounding nature supports easy sleep and waking refreshed.
  • Stress Resilience — Long used to help the mind meet daily pressure without being knocked off balance.
  • Vata and Pitta Balance — Settles the restlessness of unbalanced Vata and the heat of unbalanced Pitta, the two doshas most often behind an agitated mind.

Suggested Use

One to two grams of the powder, roughly half a teaspoon, twice daily with meals. Warm milk is the classical Anupana for Medhya herbs and carries the effect to the mind; warm water also works well. An evening serving suits those seeking restful sleep. Brahmi or Jatamansi make natural companions. Additional Information

The name is written Shankhapushpi, Shankhpushpi, Sankhapushpi and Shankhpushpalu in various transliterations of the Sanskrit, which means conch-flower. English sources call the plant Aloe weed or dwarf morning glory; Hindi speakers say Shankhahuli. Note that several regional plants share the name Shankhapushpi in trade. This powder is milled from Convolvulus pluricaulis, the species described in the classical texts.
