Panchagavya Ghrutham is a classical Ayurvedic medicated ghee (Ghrita). The name comes from pancha (five) and gavya (derived from the cow), a reference to the Panchagavya, the five traditional cow products: milk, curd, ghee, urine and dung extract. In classical Ayurveda, ghee is the ideal medium for carrying the subtle qualities of a formulation to the deeper tissues and, especially, to the mind and nervous system.

Ayurvedic Significance

Ghrita preparations are classically regarded as Medhya, meaning nourishing and supportive to the mind, intellect and the Majja (nervous tissue) dhatu. Ghee is considered the finest Anupana for reaching Majja dhatu and for pacifying Vata and Pitta in the head. Panchagavya Ghrutham is traditionally used both as an internal Rasayana for the mind and, importantly, as a Snehana (oleation) medium in the preparatory stage of Panchakarma, where controlled internal use of medicated ghee prepares the body for deeper cleansing. It is also used in classical Nasya (nasal) therapy under supervision.

Traditional Uses and Benefits

  • Mind and nervous system support: Traditionally valued as a Medhya Ghrita for the mind, memory and mental steadiness.
  • Panchakarma preparation: Classically used as a Snehana medium in the preparatory phase of Panchakarma therapy.
  • Vata-Pitta balance: The unctuous, cooling ghee base helps settle Vata and Pitta in the head.
  • Rasayana quality: Used in tradition as a rejuvenating support for the deeper tissues.

These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.

Key Ingredients

  • Goghrita (cow ghee), the nourishing, Medhya base
  • Ksheera (cow milk) and Dadhi (cow curd)
  • Gomutra (cow urine) and Gomaya swarasa (cow dung extract)
  • Together forming the classical Panchagavya

Suggested Use

As an internal medicine, traditionally taken as a quarter to half teaspoon with warm water, once or twice daily before food, or as directed by your physician. Warm water is the usual Anupana. When used for Panchakarma preparation (Snehana) or as Nasya, the dose and method must be determined and supervised by a qualified Ayurvedic physician, as these are graded, therapeutic procedures. Please consult a practitioner for personalised guidance.

Additional Information

This preparation is written in several ways, including Panchagavya Ghrutham, Panchagavya Ghrita, Panchagavya Ghritam and Panchagavyam Ghritam. The words Ghrutham, Ghrita, Ghritam and Ghee all refer to the same thing, a clarified butter base used as a medicinal medium, and Panchagavya also appears as Panchagavyam. These variations simply reflect different transliterations of the original Sanskrit and regional Indian names into English and refer to the same classical preparation.
