Nagarjuna Neelibhrungaadi Thailam is the sesame-based form of the famous Kerala hair oil, in which Nili and Bhringaraja are cooked into sesame oil together with four different milks.

Neeli is the indigo plant and bhringa names Bhringaraja, the two herbs the formula is built on, while thailam marks the sesame base that distinguishes it from the coconut-based keram.

Ayurvedic Significance

Ayurveda counts the hair as Kesha, arising alongside Asthi dhatu, and reads thinning and early loss of colour as heat, as Pitta gathered in the scalp. Nili and Bhringaraja are the two great Keshya herbs, those named for hair itself. Choosing sesame rather than coconut as the base gives this version a warmer, heavier, more deeply Snehana character, which classical practice favours where the scalp and hair run dry.

Traditional Uses & Benefits

  • Hair strength: traditionally massaged in to support hair that is well rooted and resilient.
  • Natural colour: Nili and Bhringaraja are the classical herbs associated with keeping hair dark.
  • Fullness and body: long valued in Kerala practice for thick, full-looking hair.
  • Scalp comfort: the milks and Yashtimadhu settle a scalp that feels dry, tight or itchy.
  • Deep nourishment: the sesame base carries the herbs further than a light oil would.

This is an external Ayurvedic preparation recorded in classical practice, and these are not statements of medical effect.

Key Ingredients

  • Nili (Indigofera tinctoria): the indigo plant, classically associated with dark, lustrous hair.
  • Bhringaraja (Eclipta prostrata): the foremost Keshya herb of Kerala hair oils.
  • Satakratulata (Cardiospermum halicacabum): balloon vine, cooling and soothing on the scalp.
  • Dhatriphala (Phyllanthus emblica): Amalaki, the classical cooling fruit for hair and scalp.
  • Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra): liquorice root, softening and conditioning.
  • Tila Thaila with four milks: sesame oil processed with goat's, buffalo's and cow's milk and coconut milk.

Suggested Use

Warm a little oil, part the hair and work it into the scalp with slow fingertip circles for a few minutes. Leave for an hour or overnight, then wash out. For external use only.
