Lohasavam by Kerala Ayurveda is the classical fermented tonic prepared with traditionally purified Loha (calcined iron) alongside the Trikatu spices, the Triphala fruits, Vidanga and Chitraka. It is traditionally taken to nourish the blood, to kindle appetite and digestion, and to support steady energy and a warm, healthy complexion, especially where tiredness and paleness appear together. The name comes from Loha, iron, its defining classical ingredient.

Ayurvedic Significance

Ayurveda regards a strong Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue) as the seat of colour, warmth and vitality. Purified Loha is the tradition's foremost blood-nourishing mineral, and the asava fermentation pairs it with Deepana (fire-kindling) herbs so that digestion can turn the nourishment into tissue. Warm and clearing, the formula supports the blood without dulling the appetite.

Traditional Uses and Benefits

  • Blood nourishment: traditionally taken to nourish and strengthen the blood tissue.
  • Steady energy: valued where tiredness, weakness and paleness appear together.
  • Digestive fire: the warming spices kindle appetite and ease heaviness after meals.
  • Healthy glow: classically supports a warm, healthy complexion from within.
  • Strength building: a traditional companion during recovery and depletion.

These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.

Key Ingredients

  • Loha: classically purified and calcined iron.
  • Trikatu: dry ginger, black pepper and long pepper.
  • Triphala: the three cleansing fruits.
  • Vidanga and Chitraka: clearing, kindling classics, with jaggery and honey for fermentation.

Suggested Use

A common recommendation is 15 to 25 ml with an equal quantity of water as the Anupana, twice daily after meals, or as directed by a qualified practitioner. Because it carries a mineral preparation, it is best taken under practitioner guidance for personalised dosing.

Safety & Certifications

  • Mineral preparation: contains classically prepared Loha; best taken under practitioner guidance.
  • Traditional fermentation: contains naturally self-generated alcohol; take diluted as directed.
  • Quality standards: manufactured by Kerala Ayurveda in GMP-certified facilities with authentically sourced herbs.
  • Contains jaggery: those managing diabetes should use it under practitioner guidance.
  • Pregnancy and lactation: if pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a qualified practitioner before use.
  • Medical care: ongoing fatigue or paleness should be assessed by a doctor with blood tests; do not stop prescribed supplements or medicines.
  • Storage: store in a cool, dry place, tightly closed, out of reach of children. A slight natural sediment is normal.

Additional Information

Also written as Lohasava, Lohasavam or Loha Asava. The word Asava (Asavam) denotes a self-fermented tonic prepared from fresh infusions, as distinct from an Arishta, which is fermented from a decoction. These are simply different transliterations from Sanskrit and the regional languages of India for the same classical preparation.
