Kottakkal Drakshadi Kashayam takes its name from Draksha, the sweet grape that heads the formula, while adi signals the cooling company gathered around it — Chandana, Usira, Sariba, Madhuka and the lotus parts Padmaka, Padmakesara and Mrinala. Amalaka and Parushaka lend their gentle sourness. The result is a mild, sweet-tasting decoction long turned to when the body feels overheated and depleted, and when a person wants to feel cooled, settled and restored.

Ayurvedic Significance

This is the classical Pittahara decoction. Its herbs are predominantly Madhura and Tikta in Rasa with Sheeta Virya, a combination the texts favour when heat has spread through Rasa and Rakta Dhatu. Draksha is described as Balya and gently Rasayana, replenishing tissue that excess heat has thinned. Chandana, Usira and Sariba cool the blood and clear the Srotas without drying them. Musta lends a light Pachana touch so the sweetness does not sit heavily. Together they steady Sadhaka Pitta and support a settled, unhurried mind.

Key Benefits

  • Cooling Comfort — the Sheeta Virya herbs support the body in managing internal heat and warm-weather discomfort.
  • Pitta Balance — a traditional choice for constitutions that run hot or become easily overheated.
  • Refreshed Energy — Draksha and Amalaka support recovery of vigour after heat, travel or heavy exertion.
  • Calm and Composure — the sweet, soothing profile is valued for supporting mental ease and restful nights.
  • Healthy Blood and Skin — Sariba, Chandana and Usira are the classical Raktaprasadana herbs, supporting clear, comfortable skin.

Ingredients

Each serving is prepared from a decoction of the following, at 1.157 g each: Draksha (Vitis vinifera), Madhooka (Madhuca longifolia), Madhuka (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Lodhra (Symplocos cochinchinensis var. laurina), Kasmarya (Gmelina arborea), Sariba (Hemidesmus indicus), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Amalaka (Phyllanthus emblica), Hribera (Plectranthus vettiveroides), Padmakesara (Nelumbo nucifera), Padmaka (Prunus cerasoides), Mrinala (Nelumbo nucifera), Chandana (Santalum album), Usira (Vettivera zizanoides), Nilolpala (Monochoria hastata) and Parushaka (Grewia asiatica).

Suggested Use

Adults take 10 to 15 ml twice daily. Dilute with an equal measure of warm water and take before food, the Anupana customary for a Kashayam. A few soaked raisins alongside is a traditional companion to this particular decoction. For dosage and duration suited to your constitution (Prakriti), consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Additional Information

Catalogues and classical sources spell the name in several ways, each a different transliteration from the Sanskrit: Drakshadi Kashayam, Drakshadi Kashaya, Draakshaadi Kashayam, Drakshadi Kwatha, Drakshadi Kwatham and Drakshadi Kadha. The endings Kashayam, Kashaya, Kwatha, Kwatham and Kadha all refer to the same classical water decoction.
