Brihath Nirgundyadi Thailam is a classical Ayurvedic medicated oil (Taila) from Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala. The name is drawn from its chief herb, Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), joined by the suffix adi meaning "and others", with Brihath ("the greater") marking the fuller version of the formula. It is a versatile external oil, traditionally valued for the ears, nose and throat, the skin and Vata-Kapha conditions, and is prepared in a sesame and coconut oil base.
Ayurvedic Significance
In Ayurveda, swelling, stiffness and blocked, heavy conditions of the ENT region and the skin are understood as aggravated Vata and Kapha with local congestion. Brihath Nirgundyadi is a classically Vata-Kapha pacifying and Shothahara (swelling-soothing) oil. Nirgundi is a foremost herb for swelling and comfort, supported by Bala, Rasna, Kushta and Devadaru, cooling Yashtimadhu and Jatamansi, and camphor, all carried in a nourishing sesame and coconut base with coconut milk. It is regarded as warming-to-neutral, penetrating and Vata-Kapha soothing in nature.
Traditional Uses and Benefits
- Ear, nose and throat support: Traditionally used externally for the comfort of the ENT region, including as a Karnapoorana (ear) oil.
- Skin comfort: Applied over irritated, swollen areas to soothe and calm.
- Vata-Kapha balance: Directed at conditions of aggravated Vata and Kapha.
- Swelling comfort: Regarded as Shothahara, soothing to areas of swelling.
These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.
Key Ingredients
- Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), the chief herb, with Bala (Sida cordifolia) and Rasna
- Yashtimadhu (licorice), Jatamansi and Kushta (Saussurea lappa)
- Devadaru (Cedrus deodara), Ketaki, Ashwagandha and Karpoora (camphor)
- Sesame and coconut oil base with coconut milk (Narikela)
Suggested Use
For external use only. Apply the oil gently over the affected area, leave for 10 to 15 minutes, and then wash off with lukewarm water; it may also be applied before a bath. For the ears it is used by practitioners in the traditional method of Karnapoorana. Because it is a therapeutic ENT and skin oil, it is best used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.
Safety & Certifications

Additional Information
This oil is written in several ways, including Brihath Nirgundyadi, Bruhath Nirgundyadi, Brihat Nirgundadi and Nirgundyadi Thailam. The words Thailam, Tailam, Taila and Keram all refer to a medicated oil, and Nirgundi also appears as Nirgudi or Sindhuvara. These variations simply reflect different transliterations of the original Sanskrit and regional Indian names into English and refer to the same classical preparation. It is manufactured by Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala, the respected Kerala Ayurvedic house founded by the Thaikkattu Mooss family.
