Bhringamalakadi Thailam is a classical cooling Ayurvedic medicated oil (Taila). Its name is drawn from its two chief ingredients, Bhringa (Bhringaraja, Eclipta alba, the celebrated "king of hair" herb) and Amalaki (Amla), joined by the suffix adi meaning "and others". Processed with cooling milk and licorice, it is one of Ayurveda's most valued head and hair oils, intended for external application.

Ayurvedic Significance

In Ayurveda, the health of the hair is closely linked to the Asthi dhatu and to balanced Pitta in the scalp, while heat and restlessness in the head are signs of aggravated Pitta. Bhringamalakadi is a classically Keshya (hair-supporting), Chakshushya (eye-supporting) and cooling formulation. Bhringaraja and Amalaki are the two foremost herbs for the hair, and the cooling milk, licorice and oil base soothe excess heat in the head, support restful sleep and calm the mind. It is regarded as cooling, nourishing and Pitta-pacifying in nature.

Traditional Uses and Benefits

  • Hair nourishment: Traditionally used to nourish the hair and support healthy, strong growth.
  • Cooling the head: Valued for cooling the scalp and soothing heat associated with aggravated Pitta.
  • Restful calm: A traditional Shiro Abhyanga (head massage) oil to calm the mind and support sleep.
  • Scalp comfort: Supports a comfortable, well-nourished scalp.

These reflect traditional Ayurvedic uses and are not statements of medical effect.

Additional Information

This oil is written in several ways, including Bhrungaamalakaadi, Bhringamalakadi, Bhringamalakaadi and Bhringamalaka Thailam. The words Thailam, Tailam, Taila and Keram all refer to a medicated oil, and Bhringaraja also appears as Bhringa or Bhrungaraja. These variations simply reflect different transliterations of the original Sanskrit and regional Indian names into English and refer to the same classical preparation.
