Anu Thailam is the best known classical nasya oil of Ayurveda. Its name comes from the Sanskrit anu, meaning minute or subtle, a reference to the exceptionally fine quality the oil takes on through its long, repeated preparation. Made in a sesame base with a wide range of aromatic roots, barks and woods, it is traditionally instilled as drops into the nostrils. Households across Kerala and Tamil Nadu have kept a small bottle at hand for generations as part of a daily routine for easy, comfortable breathing.

Ayurvedic Significance

Ayurveda describes the nose as the doorway to the head, and nasya, the instillation of oil through the nostrils, as the classical route for reaching the structures above the collarbone. Anu Thailam appears in the Ashtanga Hridayam among the preparations named for this purpose. Its warm, unctuous character works chiefly on Vata and Kapha, the doshas connected with dryness and heaviness in the head. The daily-routine chapters of the classical texts recommend seasonal use to keep the senses clear and the mind settled.

Traditional Uses & Benefits

  • Supports clear, comfortable breathing through the nasal passages.
  • Traditionally used to maintain natural moisture in the delicate lining of the nose.
  • Part of the classical dinacharya daily routine for care of the head and sense organs.
  • Valued for its settling effect around the forehead, temples and neck.
  • Traditionally associated with clarity of the senses, including smell and hearing.
  • Suited to dry seasons and air-conditioned or heated indoor environments.

Key Ingredients

  • Jivanti (Dendrobium macraei): a classical nourishing herb long linked with vitality.
  • Bilva (Aegle marmelos): aromatic root bark valued in traditional head care.
  • Usheera (Vetiveria zizanioides): cooling fragrant root that tempers heat and calms.
  • Bala (Sida cordifolia): strengthening herb central to Vata-balancing oils.
  • Musta (Cyperus rotundus): aromatic nut grass traditionally used to support balance.
  • Devadaru (Cedrus deodara): resinous Himalayan cedar wood used in Vata formulations.
  • Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra): sweet root traditionally soothing to delicate tissue.
  • Tila Taila (Sesamum indicum): the sesame base carrying the herbal qualities inward.

Formulated according to the traditional principles of Ayurveda.

Suggested Use

Anu Thailam is used as a nasya oil. Warm the bottle gently by rolling it between the palms. Lie back with the head tilted, place two to three drops into each nostril, and inhale slowly so the oil spreads. Remain still for a minute or two. Traditionally it is used in the morning on an empty stomach, and always under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Safety & Certifications

For nasal instillation under professional guidance only. Seek advice from a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before use during pregnancy or for children. Discontinue if any irritation occurs. Keep the bottle tightly closed, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Manufactured in India in a GMP-certified Ayurvedic facility to the standards laid down in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Additional Information

This formulation is also written as Anu Taila, Anu Tailam, Anutailam or Anu Thaila. These are simply different transliterations of one Sanskrit name into English, all naming the same classical preparation; Taila, Tailam, Thailam and Thaila are spellings of one word for oil. This 10ml bottle is a nasya oil for the nostrils. Colour and aroma vary naturally between batches because the herbs are cooked into the sesame base, and light settling is normal.

Fulfilment Notice: This is a classical Ayurvedic oil prepared by several reputable manufacturers to the same traditional specification. Depending on stock availability at the time of dispatch, your order may be supplied by any one of these established Ayurvedic houses, such as Arya Vaidya Sala (Kottakkal), Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (Coimbatore), Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala, Kerala Ayurveda, Nagarjuna or AVN Ayurveda Formulations. Whichever brand is supplied, it follows the same classical recipe and quality standards.
