Kottakkal Vyoshadi Kashayam is a classical decoction led by Vyosha, the traditional trio of Shunthi, Maricha and Pippali better known as Trikatu. The name says as much: vyosha is the old Sanskrit collective for those three pungents, and adi marks them as the herbs the formula begins with. Punarnava, Rajani and Pathya join them in a warming, appetising blend used to keep digestion brisk and Kapha from settling heavily in the channels.

Ayurvedic Significance

Ayurveda treats Agni as the pivot of wellbeing: when the digestive fire burns evenly, Rasa Dhatu forms well and nourishment reaches every tissue. Sluggish Agni instead produces Ama, which thickens and blocks the Srotas. Vyosha is the classical Deepana and Pachana pairing, kindling appetite and helping the body process what has already accumulated. Its Katu rasa and Ushna virya counter heaviness, dampness and the cold quality of aggravated Kapha. Punarnava adds Srotoshodhana, keeping the fluid channels open, while Rajani and Pathya support steady assimilation.

Key Benefits

  • Kindles healthy digestion: Trikatu is the classical Deepana group, traditionally taken to encourage a good appetite and comfortable digestion after meals.
  • Supports balanced Agni: The warming pungents help maintain an even digestive fire, which Ayurveda considers the root of well-formed tissue.
  • Helps clear Ama: Pachana herbs assist the body in working through undigested residue rather than letting it linger in the channels.
  • Encourages Kapha balance: Katu rasa and Ushna virya counter the cool, heavy, sticky qualities associated with excess Kapha.
  • Supports healthy nourishment of tissue: Punarnava, Bala and Rajani work with the pungents to help nutrients reach the Dhatus and to keep the fluid channels flowing.

Ingredients

Each dose is prepared from fourteen ingredients taken in equal measure, 1.323 g of each: Sunthi (Zingiber officinale), Maricha (Piper nigrum), Pippali (Piper longum), Ajamoda (Trachyspermum roxburghianum), Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), Ikshu (Saccharum officinarum), Loham, Pathya (Terminalia chebula), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Chincha (Tamarindus indica), Jambira (Citrus limon), Rajani (Curcuma longa), Vajralata (Cissus quadrangularis) and Tripadi (Desmodium triflorum). The first three together form Vyosha, the Trikatu group that gives the formulation its name.

Suggested Use

A typical serving is 10 to 15 ml for adults, twice daily. Dilute with an equal measure of warm water and take it before food, the customary Anupana for a Kashayam. A little honey is traditionally stirred in, a companion long paired with the Trikatu herbs. For dosage and duration suited to your constitution (Prakriti), consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Safety & Certifications

  • GMP-certified manufacture: Produced by Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal, in GMP-certified facilities.
  • Classical method: Prepared by the traditional decoction process set down in the Ayurvedic texts, without shortcuts to the boiling and reduction stages.
  • Authentic sourcing: Herbs are drawn from established growing regions and matched against classical descriptions before use.
  • AYUSH standards: Operations follow strict AYUSH guidelines for hygiene, machinery and batch tracking.
  • Tested for purity: Every incoming ingredient is checked for identity and purity before it is accepted into production.
  • Personal guidance: Those who are pregnant or nursing are best guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before beginning any classical preparation.
  • Dosha note: The blend is warming and pungent by design, so people with a strongly Pitta constitution may prefer a smaller serving taken with food and reviewed with a practitioner.
  • Storage: Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Natural sediment may settle; shake gently before pouring.

Additional Information

This formulation is catalogued as Vyoshadi Kashayam, Vyoshadi Kashaya, Vyoshadi Kwatham, Vyoshadi Kwatha and Vyoshadi Kadha, and the lead group is written both Vyosha and Vyoshadi. Kashayam, Kashaya, Kwatha, Kwatham and Kadha are simply different transliterations from Sanskrit for the same class of water decoction, and the spelling varies between regional traditions and manufacturers.
