Kottakkal Tiktakam Kashayam is the classical bitter decoction of thirteen cooling botanicals, led by Patola, Nimba, Katuka and Trayamana. It supports clear, comfortable skin, purity of the blood tissue and a cool, settled Pitta. The name derives from tikta, the bitter taste prized in Ayurveda for lightness and clarity.

Kottakkal Tiktakam Kashayam is one of the great bitter decoctions of classical Ayurveda, gathering Patola, Nimba, Katuka, Darvi, Trayamana and Bhunimba into a single cooling preparation. It is turned to for clear, comfortable skin and for the wellbeing of the blood tissue. The name comes straight from the Sanskrit tikta, meaning bitter, the taste that Ayurveda credits with drying dampness, cooling excess heat and returning a sense of lightness to the body.
Ayurvedic Significance
Bitter is the governing Rasa here, and the classical texts regard Tikta as the taste that pacifies Pitta and Kapha while purifying Rakta Dhatu. The group is described as Pittahara and Raktashodhaka: it cools the blood channels, loosens Ama lodged in the Srotas that feed the skin, and supports the liver in its steady metabolic work. Katuka and Bhunimba are noted Pittashamaka herbs, while Kana and Musta are folded in as Deepana correctives so that an intensely bitter formula does not dull Agni. Chandana closes the composition with its cooling, Ojas-friendly quality.
Key Benefits
- Clear, comfortable skin — the classical choice when the skin needs cooling support, even tone and relief from surface heat.
- Rakta Shuddhi, purity of the blood tissue — bitter herbs are traditionally used to cleanse Rakta Dhatu and keep the complexion bright.
- Cooling Pitta balance — helps settle the internal heat that shows up as flushing, irritation and restlessness in warm weather.
- Liver and metabolic wellness — Katuka, Bhunimba and Darvi are long-standing supports for healthy Yakrit function and clean metabolism.
- Calm, steady mind — by cooling excess Pitta, the formula is traditionally associated with composure and evenness of mood.

Additional Information
Sanskrit can be carried into English in more than one way, so this formulation appears under several spellings. Tiktakam Kashayam is also written Tiktaka Kashaya, Thiktakam Kashayam, Tiktakam Kwatha, Tiktakam Kwatham and Tiktaka Kadha. These are simply different transliterations of the same classical name.
