Kottakkal Mulakadyarishtam is a naturally fermented Ayurvedic tonic built around Mulaka, the garden radish, supported by Haritaki, Dhanyaka and Ela. The name reads plainly: Mulaka leads the recipe, adya signals the herbs that follow it, and arishtam marks a liquid matured through slow, self-generated fermentation. Households have long turned to it when digestion feels heavy or unpredictable. It encourages a steady digestive fire and helps the body settle Vata and Kapha across the day.

Ayurvedic Significance

Classical practice reads this Arishtam as a Deepana and Pachana formulation. It kindles Agni and helps break down Ama, the sticky residue of unfinished digestion that dulls the Srotas and leaves the body feeling weighed down. Mulaka is regarded as light and penetrating, valued where Kapha has thickened and Vata has grown irregular in the lower digestive tract. Haritaki contributes a gentle Anulomana action, guiding the movement of Vata downward. Fermentation makes the herbal actives readily available to the Dhatus, so a modest serving carries real reach.

Key Benefits

  • Supports comfortable digestion — helps meals move on without the fullness and heaviness that often follow a rich or late dinner.
  • Kindles a steady Agni — the pungent, warming character of Mulaka with Ela and Dhanyaka encourages appetite and orderly metabolic function.
  • Helps clear Ama — Haritaki and Vilanga support regular, unhurried elimination so residue is not left to linger in the channels.
  • Balances Vata and Kapha — light, warming qualities counter the cold heaviness and irregularity that unsettle both doshas.
  • Encourages a clear, comfortable complexion — traditional use links well-tended digestion and clean Srotas with calm, even-looking skin.

Ingredients

The formulation is prepared from Mulaka (Simlax china) 5.995 g, Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) 5.995 g, Guda (Saccharum officinarum) 2.284 g and Madhu (Honey) 1.570 g, together with 0.428 g each of Karavi (Nigella sativa), Arishta (Azadirachta indica), Ela (Elettaria cardamomum), Kutajabija (Holarrhena pubescens), Jyotishmati (Celastrus paniculatus), Avalguja (Cullen corylifolium), Vilanga (Embelia ribes) and Dhanyaka (Coriandrum sativum).

Suggested Use

Adults: 15 to 30 ml with an equal quantity of water after food, twice daily. As a naturally fermented Arishtam, it is generally taken after meals in accordance with traditional Ayurvedic practice. Warm water afterwards is a familiar companion habit. For dosage and duration suited to your constitution (Prakriti), consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Additional Information

You may see this formulation written as Mulakadyarishtam, Mulakadyarishta, Moolakadyarishtam, Moolakadyarishta or Mulakadi Arishtam, and the suffix rendered as either Arishtam or Arishta. These are simply different transliterations of the same Sanskrit name, reflecting Malayalam, Devanagari and romanised spelling conventions rather than any difference in the preparation itself.
