Kottakkal Manjishthadi Kwatham (Brihat) is the greater version of a much-loved decoction. Brihat means the larger one, and Manjishthadi marks Manjishtha, Indian madder, as the herb leading a company of forty-seven. Kerala vaidyas have reached for Manjishtha first when the complexion needs support from within, and here it is joined by Haridra, Daruharidra, Nimba and Sariba. Together they make one of the most complete blood-friendly formulas in the classical repertoire.

Ayurvedic Significance

Ayurveda reads the skin as the outward face of Rakta Dhatu, and this decoction works there. Manjishtha is the classical Raktashodhaka, described as clearing heat and stagnation from the blood channels, while Haridra and Daruharidra bring a drying, Kapha-clearing action to the Twak Srotas. Katuka, Kirataka and Nimba are Tikta and Pachana, breaking down Ama that has lodged in the deeper tissues. Sariba and Chandana cool an aggravated Pitta, and the three fruits of Triphala keep the eliminative channels moving, so what is loosened actually leaves the body.

Key Benefits

  • Clear, even-toned skin – Manjishtha is the herb Kerala tradition reaches for first when the complexion needs steady support from within.
  • Blood wellness – A broad group of Raktashodhaka herbs helps keep Rakta Dhatu clean and well nourished.
  • Calm, comfortable skin surface – Cooling Sariba, Chandana and Nimba are traditionally used where the skin feels warm and uneasy.
  • Healthy tissue renewal – Bitter and astringent herbs support the skin's own repair and a smooth, resilient surface.
  • Easy joints, open channels – Amrita, Bala and Sunthi have long been used to keep the joints comfortable and the Srotas free.

Ingredients

Each dose is prepared from forty-seven herbs taken in equal measure, 0.394 g of each: Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Kutaja (Holarrhena pubescens), Amrita (Tinospora cordifolia), Khana (Cyperus rotundus), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Sunthi (Zingiber officinale), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), Arishta (Azadirachta indica), Patolamula (Trichosanthes cucumerina), Katuka (Neopicrorhiza scrophulariiflora), Bharngi (Clerodendrum serratum), Vidanga (Embelia ribes), Agni (Plumbago zeylanica), Murva (Chonemorpha fragrans), Daru (Cedrus deodara), Kalinga (Holarrhena pubescens), Bhringa (Eclipta prostrata), Magadha (Piper longum), Trayanti (Gentiana kurroo), Patha (Cyclea peltata), Sathi (Kaempferia galanga), Gayatri (Acacia catechu), Pathya (Terminalia chebula), Dhatri (Phyllanthus emblica), Vibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), Kirataka (Swertia chirayita), Mahanimba (Melia azedarach), Asana (Pterocarpus marsupium), Aragvadha (Cassia fistula), Syama (Operculina turpethum), Avalguja (Cullen corylifolium), Chandana (Santalum album), Varanaka (Crataeva magna), Puthika (Holoptelia integrifolia), Sakhotaka (Streblus asper), Vasa (Justicia beddomei), Parpata (Oldenlandia corymbosa), Sariba (Hemidesmus indicus), Krishnasariba (Ichnocarpus frutescens), Visha (Aconitum heterophyllum), Ananta (Tragia involucrata), Visala (Citrullus colocynthis), Jala (Plectranthus vettiveroides), Shatgrandha (Acorus calamus), Madhuyashti (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and Mangalyapushpi (Clitoria ternatea).

Suggested Use

A usual serving is 10 to 15 ml, twice daily. Kwatham is best taken with an equal measure of warm water before food. A pinch of honey is sometimes stirred in to soften the bitterness. For dosage and duration suited to your constitution (Prakriti), consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Safety & Certifications

  • GMP-certified manufacture – Produced by Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal, in a GMP-certified facility.
  • Classical method – Prepared by the traditional decoction process laid down in the Ayurvedic texts.
  • Authentic sourcing – Herbs are drawn from trusted growers and the traditional collection regions of Kerala.
  • AYUSH-aligned operations – Hygiene, machinery and batch tracking follow strict AYUSH guidelines.
  • Tested for purity – Every incoming herb is checked for identity and purity before it is accepted.
  • Thoughtful use – Those who are pregnant or nursing, and anyone managing an ongoing health condition, are encouraged to speak with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner first. The bitter, cooling character of this decoction suits Pitta and Kapha; a strongly Vata constitution may prefer guided use.
  • Storage – Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Shake well before use.

Additional Information

Kwatham, Kwatha, Kashayam, Kashaya and Kadha all name the same thing, a water decoction of herbs, written differently as the Sanskrit is carried into English. The formulation name likewise appears as Manjishthadi Kwatham, Manjishtadi Kwatham, Manjisthadi Kashayam, Manjishtadi Kashaya and Maha Manjishthadi Kwatham, while Brihat is also written Brihath or Bruhat. These are spelling variations from Sanskrit, not different preparations.
