Kottakkal Kulathadi Kashayam is a short, warming classical decoction built around Kulattha, the horse gram that gives the formula its name; adi simply marks the herbs that follow it. Lasuna, Eranda and Tila round out a group of four. Kulattha has been valued since the classical texts for keeping the urinary passage clear and the flow easy, and the warming, unctuous character of the set as a whole works against the cold, heavy quality of aggravated Vata and Kapha.

Ayurvedic Significance

Kulattha is the classical Ashmarihara dravya, named in the texts for its work on the Mutravaha Srotas and its knack for keeping that channel open. Its Katu Vipaka and Ushna Virya cut through Kapha-linked stagnation, while Lasuna adds a penetrating, Vata-pacifying warmth that reaches the deeper Dhatus. Eranda performs Vatanulomana, restoring the downward course of Apana Vata that governs elimination and the whole lower pelvis. Tila lends Snigdha quality, offsetting dryness so the warming action never turns harsh. The combination is Vata-Kapha samana and mildly Lekhana.

Key Benefits

  • Healthy urinary flow - Kulattha is the classical herb of the Mutravaha Srotas, traditionally taken to keep the urinary passage clear and the flow easy.
  • Open channels, less stagnation - the warming, penetrating quality of Kulattha and Lasuna counters the heavy, sticky Kapha that clogs the channels.
  • Vata-Kapha balance - a warming, unctuous formula that answers the cold, dense qualities behind Vata-Kapha imbalance.
  • Comfort in the lower abdomen and pelvis - Eranda guides Apana Vata along its natural downward path, easing tension held low in the body.
  • A comfortable monthly rhythm - the same downward-moving, Vata-pacifying action is traditionally valued by women for an easy, regular cycle.

Suggested Use

A usual serving is 10 to 15 ml for adults, taken twice daily. Dilute with an equal measure of warm water and take it before food, the traditional Anupana for a Kashayam. Generous plain water through the day is the customary companion to this formula. For dosage and duration suited to your constitution (Prakriti), consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Additional Information

This formulation is written in several different transliterations from Sanskrit. Kulathadi Kashayam also appears as Kulatthadi Kashayam, Kulathadi Kashaya, Kulatthaadi Kwatha, Kulathadi Kwatham and, in North Indian usage, Kulathadi Kadha. Kashayam, Kashaya, Kwatha, Kwatham and Kadha all name the same classical decoction form. The spelling shifts with the regional script and the romanisation chosen, not with the preparation itself.
