The Sanskrit word sarpagandha literally means one which smells like a serpent. It is mentioned in all ancient Ayurvedic scriptures for its special property, as a sedative and anti-hypertensive. Reserpine (modern medicine) causes side-effects and sarpagandha does not, because sarpagandha is a living being and reserpine is not. Plants are made form the same five elements as we animals; like us, they also have channels of circulation as well as digestive fire (which perform photosynthesis).
Uses : It helps to reduce blood pressure, depresses activity of central nervous system and acts as a hypnotic. Snakeroot depletes catecholamines and serotonin from nerves in central nervous system. Refined snakeroot has been used extensively in recent years to treat hypertension. It is used as an antidote to the bites of poisonous reptile like snakes.
Indicated in hypertension, sleep & mental disturbances.
It is also used to treat dysentery and other painful affections of the intestinal canal.
